Uncharted Hero Nathan Drake Is Still Retired, Says Director

Uncharted's Nathan Drake Is Still In Retirement, Says Director Neil Druckmann

If you want more Uncharted adventures with Nathan Drake, you're probably not getting a new one with him anymore.

That's because according to Neil Druckmann, who worked as the writer and director of Uncharted 4, Nate is most definitely retired. He is still in retirement as of this writing, meaning that Naughty Dog has no plans (at least immediate ones) to bring back their quintessential PlayStation hero, reports ComicBook.com.

Druckmann made this clear in a recent Twitter post celebrating the 6th anniversary of Uncharted 4:

For now, what he's stating here is painfully obvious: Nate and his wife Elena, including Sully, are now retired. The ending of Uncharted 4 says so: they have a pretty nice and sizeable beachfront property where they're raising a teenage daughter, Cassie. Many mementos from Nate's adventures were stored in a locked cabinet which Cassie gets to unlock while her parents were away, as we see in this epilogue:

But even if the game itself was titled A Thief's End, it wasn't really the end of the Uncharted franchise as a whole. A year later, the series was back with a spinoff game featuring another colleague of Drake's, Chloe Frazer, working with former antagonist Nadine Ross to find another lost treasure.

There's also the release of the live-action Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. While the film itself wasn't received well by critics, it actually grossed a good amount: $300 million in the global box office, reports TheGamer. This makes the movie pretty much a financial success - even if it did make many changes that got long-time Uncharted fans raise their eyebrows.

With this success, it is understandable that Naughty Dog wants - alongside Sony - will want to keep the franchise alive for longer, even with Drake already retired.

Numerous rumors suggest that a fifth game in the series is already in development, according to RealSport101. But it will have to feature a new protagonist, which the series itself is not short of. After all, Chloe has already proved her mettle as a heroine during Lost Legacy:

GameRant agrees, once again proposing that Chloe be the main character for a new Uncharted game. According to them, her performance in Lost Legacy is more than enough proof that she can carry her own game. Aside from that, picking her would also open the doors for more past characters to come say hi, all without them feeling like they were put in there without any reason.

Nadine Ross could once again see a return, as well as Nate's brother Sam who was also in Lost Legacy. Who knows? Maybe Sully could once again play the old wise guy tutoring the new treasure-hunting badass. But then again, everything is up in the air at this point.
