Diablo Immortal Can't Be Played On Samsung Phones With Exynos Chips

Some Samsung Phones With Exynos Chips Are Having Trouble Playing Diablo Immortal

For some reason, the newly released MMORPG Diablo Immortal seems to be broken on Samsung phones featuring Exynos chips. As a result, so many players are unable to play the game - even if reviews are lukewarm at best.

Released for the PC, Android, and iOS, Immortal finally arrived four years after being first announced - in an event that became the stuff of internet legend. But the game has been having trouble on Samsung's Exynos series of mobile APUs, with the biggest problem being widespread texture pop-in, reports Engadget.

Owners of phones from as far back as the Galaxy S10, A51 5G, and Note 10 are reporting issues. But it's not just them, as newer models like the Galaxy S22 are also seeing problems with Diablo Immortal on Exynos chips. However, people who own Qualcomm-equipped versions of the aforementioned devices don't seem to have the same problems, as they reported being able to download and play the game like normal.

Developer Activision Blizzard issued a statement on the bugs megathread for Immortal on the game's subreddit. In the statement, Community Lead Adam "PezRadar" Fletcher mentioned that the team is "exploring the issues" that the owners of specific Samsung Galaxy devices are having with the new MMORPG. As one of their first solutions, ActiBlizz says they might disable downloads for the devices while they work to fix the problems, further saying that the team "will be working on getting a fix up and ready as soon as possible."

Here is the complete list of affected Samsung devices, as per Fletcher's comment:

  • Galaxy A12
  • Galaxy A13
  • Galaxy A21s
  • Galaxy A51 5G
  • Galaxy A Quantum
  • Galaxy S10e
  • Galaxy S10
  • Galaxy S10+
  • Galaxy S10 5G
  • Galaxy Note10
  • Galaxy Note10 5G
  • Galaxy Note10+
  • Galaxy Note10+ 5G
  • Galaxy F12
  • Galaxy F62
  • Galaxy M12
  • Galaxy M13
  • Galaxy M62
  • Galaxy XCover 5

If you own any of these devices, you might need to wait until the fix is out.

What Exactly Is Causing Diablo Immortal's Exynos Problems?

Activision Blizzard didn't elaborate much on what's exactly causing the problems for Diablo Immortal on Exynos chips - both old and new. But it seems like the issues are more or less uniform across the affected devices: massive texture popin, as previously mentioned, but also stuttering that makes the game borderline unplayable.

Here is a short gameplay clip of Diablo Immortal on Exynos, played using an S22 Ultra - which you'll notice isn't included in the above list, but is also experiencing stutters:

One of the tell-tale signs of the problem is the game's CPU and GPU usage, both of which are high. In normal cases, the GPU is supposed to be the only one being utilized at close to 100%. But in the gameplay shown above, the CPU is hovering in the mid-80s to as much as 90% usage - not an ideal scenario when it comes to hardware. You always want to keep CPU usage at low or medium, because it means that the GPU will be doing most of the work rendering the visuals.

It is unclear whether Activision Blizzard will target that problem with their fix, so everything's up in the air at this point.
