RePlay: When was the Last Time You Played Hotel 626?

How much did it spook you out?

We are back with our second RePlay feature and we sure are excited for this one!

If you happen to be scratching your head and wondering what RePlay is, no worries! We here at GameNGuide just started the series last year so it is all brand new. Let us first tell you about it.

RePlay is a weekly series that screams nostalgia. This is because we feature video games from old consoles in this series. That includes games from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and more.

We will also feature old PC games and this is exactly what we are doing today. Specifically, we are shining the spotlight on a horror browser game that was actually a marketing ploy by Doritos. Do you remember what it is?

It is none other than Hotel 626.

Yes, you read that right. Hotel 626, a horror browser game which hit the internet in 2008, was actually a marketing stunt by Doritos.

According to an article by WhatCulture, "Bringing the Black Pepper Jack and Smokin' Cheddar BBQ flavours 'back from the dead', the promotional packs advertised a mysterious website listed as www.hotel626.com, titled for its access hours of 6pm to 6am everyday."

The premise of the game is actually pretty simple. All you had to do was to escape. In order to do so, however, an article by YugaTech says that "you must go through a series of pre-planned events while being chased by a dark, consuming shadow."

Like with any horror game, that is easier said than done, especially when you find yourself trapped in any of the rooms of the haunted hotel. One room had a baby that you literally had to sing to sleep at the volume. Screw that up and well, the baby turns creepy and you can probably guess what happens next.

Did You Give Your Phone Number?

To say that Hotel 626 is immersive is probably one of the greatest understatements of the century. The game is played from the first person point-of-view and had a fisheye effect, according to YugaTech. Its cinematic cutscenes will make you feel like you're literally in a place called Hotel 626.

To play the game, you would also need your webcam, microphone, and even your phone. Why did the game need your phone number? At some point, you would actually receive a real-life phone call to tell you just how you can escape the hotel. Creepy and cool at the same time, right?

But that is not the only phone call you would get. According to WhatCulture, you would actually get a second phone call days later "to tell you that you never really left the hotel, and that there's no real escape from its horrors."

Is It Still Possible to RePlay Hotel 626 Today?

Sadly, the answer to that question is no. The game disappeared sometime in 2011. It should be noted that the game was just a marketing stunt so it was really meant to be around for a limited time only.

If you want to check yourself if Hotel 626 is still available or not, you can head to www.hotel626.com and see where it takes you.
