The Last Of Us Part 1 Is 'Not a Cashgrab,' Says Developer

An Animator Who Worked On The Last Of Us Part 1 Defends The Game

People are criticizing the announcement of The Last Of Us Part 1 for the PS5, saying that it's a blatant cashgrab intended to just lure people who already own the game into spending more. But a developer who worked on the defended the game, as they're expected to be.

The team put forth "a tremendous amount of passion" into remaking the original The Last of Us for PS5, according to animator Robert Morrison (via GamesRadar). While not actually an employee at Naughty Dog, Morrison worked on the project via the Visual Arts Studio before joining another first-party PlayStation developer, Bend Studio (the ones who made Days Gone).

Morrison tweeted in defense of The Last Of Us Part 1 recently, apparently incensed by the numerous claims that the remake is nothing more than a cash grab:

For those who can't see the tweet, here's what he said:

Actually, it's the most meticulously built and crafted project that i have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career. The highest level of care and attention to detail possible.

And one could agree with the animator's statements, considering just how much detail that the remade The Last Of Us on PS5 added compared to the original - even more so than the remastered one released for the PS4. Also, one could understand that somebody who worked on the project would defend it because, frankly, it is their livelihood.

But many gamers didn't agree to it as a whole - obviously - or else, we won't be having this article. Perhaps the biggest gripe they have with it is that the game costs $70 on the PS5, and you'll have to get it new to get all the fancy added features and upgraded graphics. It doesn't matter if you already own the remastered version or even the original PS3 version.

To be fair, many people are criticizing the "next-gen tax" imposed on PS5 (and by extension, Xbox Series X/S) games in general. But one should know that increased game prices aren't done lightly.

Is The Last Of Us Part 1 On PS5 Worth It?

At the end of the day, it really depends on you whether or not you think a remade The Last Of Us for PS5 (with the original game having come out for the PS3 almost a decade ago) is worth it or not. IGN discusses in a video whether the remake itself is worth its full $70 price tag, and here are their arguments:

To them, the next-gen pricing is steep despite all the redone visuals and gameplay additions. This is considering how the remastered version on PS4 would cost less, and how the original game on PS3 can be had for dirt cheap on the used market. It's going to be the same story with Naughty Dog's promised "modernized" gameplay and visuals, and that's it.

While remakes are all the rage these days, The Last Of Us isn't exactly the type of game that needs a remake. Sure, it's old, but it's not as old as those who've had massive, drastic overhauls (i.e. final Fantasy 7 remake or the remade version of the OG Resident Evil) from way older PlayStation consoles. Aside from that, The Last Of Us has already had a remastered version that's still close to full price.

Either way, it's on you whether you want to buy the remake or not.
