Classic SNES Game Super Punch Out's PvP Mode Discovered After 28 YEARS

Dust Off Your SNES Copy Of Super Punch Out And Try Some PvP

The classic SNES title Super Punch Out came out way back in 1994, and people thought for sure that whatever gameplay stuff it offered was laid bare back then. But perhaps they never looked forward to this one right here.

As reported by GameSpot, a certain cheat for the SNES game has been discovered that allows two players to fight in PvP - 28 years after the game was first released. This would make Super Punch Out one of the earliest examples of local PvP multiplayer before the idea of multiplayer gaming itself fully takes off years after the fact.

The aforementioned cheat was discovered by Unlisted Cheats. It specializes in finding previously unknown cheats and other game elements in retro games. For Super Punch Out on the classic Nintendo console, Unlisted Cheats discovered two new cheat inputs, each comprised of two-button combinations. Using the cheat is only possible on an original, unmodified SNES copy of Super Punch Out (not to be confused with Mike Tyson's Punch Out).

To enable it, hold Y + R on the second controller, then press A or start on the main controller. That's pretty much it.

The first input allowed players some sort of "free play" mode within the game. This mode allows players to freely choose who they want to fight, and actually helps activate the second cheat which transfers control of the rival character from the CPU to the actual player using a second gamepad. Here is a Twitter conversation where Unlisted Cheats details the newly discovered PvP mode:

Either way, finding this new mode via cheats on a 28-year-old game is extremely cool to know, especially now that retro gaming is having a boom. Many gamers are revisiting memories of their childhood on the old consoles they grew up playing. And to say that Nintendo's SNES is an iconic console is an understatement, since it became the world's best-selling 16-bit gaming system back in the day. TechRadar even claims that this is the best gaming console of all time.

The Rise Of Retro Gaming In The Modern Era

Retro gaming is experiencing something akin to a renaissance within the last few years, mainly due to just how modern gaming consoles have been built. Microsoft, for instance, basically turned their Xbox Series X and Series S systems into retro game emulation powerhouses.

Here's a video posted by popular tech YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips, showcasing just how good of an emulator the Xbox Series S is:

Another system that is being turned into a retro gaming emulator is Valve's newly released Steam Deck handheld. Laptop Mag turned theirs into a system that can play not just normal Steam games, but also PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo titles. This was all done using the console's Linux operating system and a separate emulator application.

Here is a demonstration of the app that Laptop Mag used, called EMU Deck:
