Darkwood just got a huge patch that implemented many useful features and various improvements to make the gaming experience so much better for everyone.
Developed by a small indie team called Acid Wizard Studio, Darkwood is a gritty top-down survival horror game where you try your best to survive at all costs. Go out there and scour for resources during the day, but make sure that you get back before nighttime, or you will face ethereal horrors that will surely leave you speechless for days!
Although it does not have the visual eye candy you normally see in modern games, Darkwood makes up for it in sheer gameplay and dialogue. If these do not convince you, just look at its recent reviews, where it got an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating on Steam.
Controller Improvements
Darkwood can certainly be enjoyed using a controller. The company thinks so, too, which is why it implemented a number of improvements in the newly released Update 1.4.
One of the highlights of the patch is the addition of aim assist for gamepads. This enables you to get a better aim just by moving in the direction of the enemy.
Aside from aim assist, your character now jumps over obstacles automatically while you are running. This alleviates the need to press more buttons to do the same thing.
If you are using an Xbox controller, some of the actions have been reworked to make things feel a lot better. For instance, primary action is now set to the "A" button, and the default for running/vaulting is now set to the "B" button.
Reloading your weapons can now be initiated by pressing the left thumbstick. If you need to look farther, you can press the right trigger (right shoulder) button as well.

Other Changes
Update 1.4 also adds Steam Cloud support. Steam Cloud allows you to save your progress and in-game settings directly on the platform. Whenever you need to reformat your PC, or you're going to play on another computer, just install Darkwood from Steam, and all of your settings will be synced automatically.
In addition, the game now has better 4K support. If you are running a compatible 4K monitor, the user interface is likely to look wonky when you update to the latest version.
Another thing to note is that Darkwood was made using the Unity Engine. That said, this game now uses version 2021.3.30, which means that performance is way better than before and crashes are less likely to happen.
Patch Notes
IMPROVEMENTS
- Added Steam DRM on Windows. This DRM is added to pretty much every game on Steam and is nothing like Denuvo, which made DRM a trigger word. We need to add this to have no issues with Steam integration; please read up on it if you're concerned.
- Added the Automagical Save File Corruption Recovery System. If your saves get corrupted/deleted, the system will try to use the backups without any input from your part.
- The gamepad control scheme and UI have received many improvements.
- Fixed the vast majority of known bugs. We couldn't fix them all, though (but believe me, we tried!)
- Fixed achievements are not unlocking for many players.
GAMEPAD MODE
- Objects selection has been reworked.
- Context menu has been reworked.
- Inventory: Objects selection has been reworked.
- Throwing objects mechanics have been reworked.
- Inventory, Workshop, Saw: UI has been reworked.
Darkwood Update 1.4 is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
