The Art of Bug Catching

Coral Island, a cozy game that offers a variety of activities, has a unique feature that allows players to become the island’s resident bug-catcher. Bug Catching is a game mechanic that allows you to collect many different critters all over the island. This activity is not only entertaining but also contributes to your mission to restore Starlet Town to its former rank and glory.

The only tool you can use to catch critters in Coral Island is the Net. You will receive this tool from Eleanor on your third day on the island, right after receiving a letter from her and Sunny calling you to the Beach Shack. The net can be improved like other farmers’ tools. Improved Nets will still use up the same amount of energy per swing, but their range and catching efficiency will improve.

Mastering the Net

Using the net requires expert aim and swiftness, so it can be a little frustrating to get it right at first. The best way to use the net is to hold the function key or button down until the farmer begins creeping around; this will project a small AoE for the net’s reach. Aiming that AoE field towards the critter will give you enough of a lead on whether you are going to catch it.

Each critter will have a small circle show up above it to indicate they are aware you are approaching. This circle does not fill equally fast for all critters, but upon filling, the critter will attempt an escape. Let the bug calm down. Then take gradual steps towards it. Sometimes, if you follow at a distance, and are patient, it will turn around and start flying toward you instead of away. When it gets close enough to start panicking, move quickly towards it (you can even dash if you want) and get it in your “catch zone” of the white cone.

Through perseverance and dedication, individuals of all skill levels can hone their bug-catching abilities, thereby contributing to the expansion of the museum collection or accruing coral coins.
