Super Mario Maker 'Final Boss' Remains Uncleared Even After More Than 40K Tries

Super Mario Maker Has One Final Uncleared Level Ahead of Apr 8 Servers Shutdown

The Super Mario Maker community is trying to beat the game's "final boss," which is the last level that remains uncleared before the inevitable Wii U servers shutdown.

In late 2017, there were roughly 85,000 levels that remained uncleared other than their creators in the original Wii U game. Since then, a group of dedicated players teamed up, calling themselves "Team 0%," to try and beat all of the levels before an external deadline of Apr. 8, 2024.

This is when Nintendo said it would shut down the aging Wii U's servers for good, essentially making all of the community-made levels inaccessible. After years of efforts, Team 0% only has one level to clear, known as "Trimming the Herbs," which is a devious, Super Mario World-styled Bob-omb bounce-and-throw gauntlet.

In the next three weeks, the world will see whether or not Team 0% will get the job done or if some other player manages to beat the insanely difficult level first. The efforts to beat every single community-made level in Super Mario Maker began when player The0dark0one scraped the Nintendo server data, according to ArsTechnica.

By doing this, he essentially created a definitive list of then-uncleared levels, and a few months later, the founder of Team 0%, Jeffie, stumbled upon that list on Reddit. He then had an idea, which he called stupid, which was to clear everything.

After Jeffie pitched the idea on a general Super Mario Maker server, he worked to gather a few other players who were willing to join him in the effort on a fresh Discord server. Instead of simply picking through the tens of thousands of uncleared levels randomly, they first tried to clear a manageable target of 13,000 levels that had been uploaded in 2015, which was the game's first calendar year.

Beating "Trimming The Herbs"

Black60Dragon, a Team 0% administrator and early participant, said that at the time, the number seemed like a challenging but still realistic goal. He added that the levels uploaded in the game's first year were pretty interesting because there wasn't any difficult gameplay that was invented at the time.

Throughout the years-long grind, Nintendo decided to cut off new uploads of original Super Mario Maker levels in March 2021. But with the last remaining level now in the crosshair of nearly every single player in the world, it seems that it's only a matter of time before it is cleared, said IGN.

A particular player of note is LilKirbs, who successfully completed every single part of the remaining level individually. Now, he only needs to put it all together and make that one perfect run to be able to end the six-year-long endeavor by Team 0%.

The first Super Mario Maker game was an exclusive for the Wii U that allowed players to create their own levels. They can use obstacles and enemies from a variety of games, including the original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World.

They can then share these levels online for other people to try out and this would theoretically allow for an infinite number of levels to be played, according to GameRant.
