Dark Souls 2 Players Have Already Lost Over 13 Trillion Souls to Death

Dark Souls 2 Players Have Already Lost 13,051,713,397,869 Souls to Death

The Dark Souls series is known for being exceedingly difficult and unforgiving. Death is inevitable, and when you recover, you're bound to just die again soon. Players in Dark Souls 2 have already lost 13,051,713,397,869 souls--yes, that's the real statistic--to 252,163,804 deaths in the game since its mid-March release.

Souls are the form of currency and experience in the series, collected by the player from defeated enemies and corpses littering the environment. When you die, your collected souls are dropped on the spot, but you are given a chance to get back to the location of your death and reclaim them. If you are killed en route to where your souls are waiting, though, they disappear permanently--you are only given one life to get your valuable currency back.

You can hold on to many souls at once, which is how players have lost such a staggering total. Thirteen trillion, fifty one billion, seven hundred and thirteen million, three hundred ninety seven thousand, eight hundred and sixty nine souls is a whole lot to lose, and you might be wondering how the deaths that caused these loses came about. Here are the leading contributors, accompanied by how many vanished souls they're responsible for:

- Enemy 165,692,980

- Falls 45,238,688

- Other players 18,436,039

- Other 14,741,950

- Traps 4,252,244

Enemies are of course the leading cause of death, but the fact that falls are the second most common is just a tragic statistic. They can certainly catch you by surprise, but it's just sad to see it written down as the cause of 45,238,688 lost souls. Be more careful out there, everyone! These are only the numbers after about a month of playing--I'd hate to see the total in a year (and once the PC version is out later this month).
