There are rumors that State of Decay 3 will have an update highlight in the June Xbox Showcase later this year as teased by an industry insider.
WindowsCentral's Jez Corden hinted at the possibility that the latest title in the survival game franchise could show up during the event. He posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying, "I'm excited about Gears 6 for the June Xbox Showcase, but there's another game whose state I'm incredibly excited to learn more about."

The specific word fans have noticed about the social media post is the term "state," which could refer to Undead Labs' zombie title. The third installment in the franchise was initially revealed during the 2020 Xbox Showcase but there have been no official updates about it since then from either Undead Labs or Xbox.
In March 2022, Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, said that they were looking at State of Decay 3, noting that they were excited about some of the advancements that would be made to the latest entry into the franchise, according to Insider Gaming.
He continued to say at the time during an XboxEra podcast that the developers have had this pattern where they talk about a game publicly starting from the first game in the franchise. He revealed that he also enjoyed playing the franchise because he likes building and gathering resources.
There has not been much that was publicly revealed regarding State of Decay 3 other than a cinematic trailer, which doesn't offer much in terms of how the gameplay actually looks or what the mechanics are. There were also rumors before that suggested the title could launch in 2027.
The upcoming title in the franchise comes as fans of the series have a lot of features and changes that they want to see in the new game. The latest available game in the series, State of Decay 2, focuses on fending off hordes of flesh-eating zombies, scavenging resources, gathering NPC survivors, and maintaining a community.
Improving From Past Titles
However, the biggest change that the second game in the franchise made from its predecessor was the addition of co-op multiplayer mode. This let fans work together with other players and also introduced a lot of quality-of-life improvements, said GameRant.
Due to how many changes have been seen in the survival genre across the whole gaming industry, it could be wise for Undead Labs to consider some things that it could add or change in its latest title.
One of these is a more robust character creation feature to let players build unique avatars, a feature that fosters creativity. This could extend to in-game, with specific traits, skills, and flaws that provide bonuses and nerfs in a variety of ways.
State of Decay 2 itself has an intended focus on a community that stands together or falls apart as one in a classic zombie plague scenario. But while there are hordes of flesh-eating monsters at nearly every corner, the game itself feels less like horror and more like slapstick, according to The Guardian.
