Nintendo's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake is set to launch next month and will add a variety of quality-of-life improvements over the original game.
The upcoming remake features significantly improved visuals that are stunning to look at while sticking with the foundational art style of the classic. While the original game was memorable for making the game feel like a pop-up book came to life, the remake makes it more modern.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake adds a lot of flourishes and touches that make the game a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch OLED. One example is the Boogly Woods, which previously was already beautiful with its striking black-and-white first with its vine-filled environment.
But the remake improves this by making the ground shimmer and change color as the player moves around. There are also leaves that continuously fall from the sky with petals flying up around as players enter the patches of vegetation in the area, making the levels feel more alive, according to IGN.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake also features a lot more color compared to the original game. This is seen in the opening moments when Mario first arrives in the city of Rogueport. In the original title, the ground was littered with paper that was mostly just grayish brown.

However, in the remake, these papers have a more vibrant yellow color that adds up to an overall more beautiful and visually stunning experience. Other than improving the graphics, the remake is also a faithful recreation of the classic GameCube title.
It doesn't feature any new story content or levels because Nintendo opted to bring the game up to 2024 standards instead of adding new stuff. This is something that the Japanese video game company also did for Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury.
Various Quality-of-Life Improvements
The upcoming release of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake comes as Nintendo will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original game. The remake also makes some improvements to controls that make it easier for newcomers to enjoy the game, said Digital Trends.
These include when players press the left bumper, they are able to bring up a quick access wheel that lets them swap partners on the go. The left trigger will also activate a new guided hint system that features Goombella telling players where to go next.
Another change that the remake made is a new NPC in Rogueport, a purple toad named the Battle Master. He carries a lot of tutorials that will help newcomers to the RPG game get accustomed.
The new NPC also lets players practice their assist commands so that they can figure out the right timing for various blocks and attacks. A helpful mouse named Foomus was also added, who helps players keep track of quest locations.
The story of the game has players helping Mario and his friends as they go on an adventure to rescue Princess Peach. The kidnappers who took the Mushroom Kingdom royal are a group of aliens known as the X-Nauts led by the evil Lord Crump, according to Polygon.
