Destiny 2 Makes 3 Expansions Free-to-Play Ahead of The Final Shape Release

Ahead of Destiny 2's The Final Shape release, Bungie is making three of the game's expansions free-to-play for all players as well as giving them access to content from the past four Seasons.

The expansions in question are The Witch Queen, Beyond Light, and Shadowkeep, which will all be free starting May 7, 2024, to June 3, 2024. Additionally, players who are subscribed to PlayStation Plus will get access to the current Destiny 2 expansion, Lightfall, during the same time period.

The massive content drop for players comes as The Final Shape has been delayed and will be released on June 4, 2024.

Bungie describes the upcoming expansion as the culmination of the first 10 years of Destiny storytelling. The developer also noted that it is the culmination of countless hours that Guardians have spent together.

It was also said that in The Final Shape, players will have to pursue the Witness into the Pale Heart of the Traveler, rally the Vanguard, and fight to end the War of Light and Darkness.

The final expansion comes as the game has experienced declining player numbers and the studio has had mass layoffs, according to Video Games Chronicle.

In December of last year, it was claimed that Bungie's position as an independent subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment was under threat.

The company's current board structure is reportedly contingent on it hitting certain financial goals. If that fails, Sony could choose to dissolve the board and take full control.

Ahead of the release of The Final Shape, Bungie has added a lot of new content and features to the game in order to attract more players. These include the new Onslaught horde mode, Brave weapon loot, and Pantheon boss rush event.

All of these sought to keep the existing player base occupied while also trying to get older players to get back into the game. The three expansions becoming free-to-play is the latest effort that Bungie has taken to remedy its dropping popularity.

Ahead of The Final Shape's Release

Out of three expansions, Beyond Light is notable because it gives players access to a subclass, Stasis, that focuses on freezing temperatures. The expansion that comes free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, Lightfall, also features the subclass Strand, said PCGamer.

On the other hand, the content that will be made accessible includes Season of Defiance, Season of the Depe, Season of the Witch, and Season of the Wish.

Some of these feature some extremely popular content, such as the Deep Dive and The Coil activities as well as the Avalon and Starcrossed exotic missions.

In regards to the three expansions being made free, Bungie said that players who have not yet finished the New Light quest chain can skip it and go straight to all of its content. The company also noted that there are two gifts you can receive.

First, visit Shaxx in the Hall of Champions to get high-power gear from the Gift of the Thunder God chest, and second, go to Ikora in the Tower to choose your New Light kit, according to the PlayStation Blog.
