Skylanders Trap Team Announced: Release Date In October, Offers Crystals That Let You Trap and Use Villains [VIDEO]

At a press event simultaneously held in NYC and London, Activision today announced Skylanders Trap Team, the latest in their absurdly popular game and action figure series. Developed by series originator Toys For Bob and compatible with the full line-up of Skylanders figures released so far, the game will offer a completely new type of gameplay that allows you to trap villains inside crystals and use them for the powers of good.

The game will offer 60 brand new Skylanders and 40 trappable villains. The big gimmick this time is that certain villains, when defeated, can be trapped using a real-life "crystal". These colored pieces of plastic are new to the series and can be collected in real life just like the regular figures. There will be one for each type of element and can be used to contain villains from the game for your later use. Once a villain is captured you can play as him the way you would any Skylander hero by placing him in a slot on the new 'Traptanium Portal', and even swap between both Skylander and Villain characters on the fly in order to utilize both's abilities. The new Portal also has a built-in and the villain, once captured inside a crystal, can talk from inside it.

What's better? Series villain Kaos can be trapped, as well. That's right- playable Kaos.

Skylanders: Trap Team will be available on October 5, 2014 in a starter set that comes with two new Skylandersfigures (Snap Shot and Food Fight) and two crystals. You can preorder the game right now. Skylanders Trap Teamwill be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Wii and Wii U, and offer a completely different experience on 3DS.
