'Dota 2' The International 2014 Tournament Funding Reaches $4.3 Million

Stong Compendium Sales Push Dota 2 International Tournament to $4.3 Million in Funding

Valve's worldwide Dota 2 tournament The International is the game's biggest, and the prize pool has reached astounding new heights. The sold out live finals in July are now boasting a $4.3 million reward pool, due largely to strong Compendium sales.

The Compendium is the interactive digital program for the tournament, which is sold for $10. For every sale, $2.50 is put towards the event's prize pool, contributing to much of the total so far. Players are given in-game rewards for purchasing the Compendium as well, and Valve still wants to raise more prize money.

Like Star Citizen, The International funding offers bonus goals Valve would like to reach, giving out rewards or adding something to the game for reaching monetary milestones. If funding reaches $4.5 million, for example, players will unlock new music--$5 million gets them a new matchmaking option.

The Compendium is not just a guide book, but something you can grow and add to through in-game actions. Introduced for last year's tournament, you can now level up the Compendium, in addition to using it to pick teams and make predictions. It's a way for fans who cannot attend the live event in Seattle to interact with The International.

"Every 100 points will level up your Compendium," Valve explains on the Dota 2 website. "You'll receive extra immortal treasures, obtain new custom in-game effects, get bonus Loading Screens and increase your Battle Point Booster percentage as you progress."

The International at Seattle's KeyArena is already sold out, and will take place from July 18 to 22. If you weren't one of those who got tickets, the games will be streamed online worldwide.
