'Flappy Bird' Return Date: 'Less Addictive' Version With Multiplayer Mode Coming In August?

Flappy Bird Returning To App Store With Multiplayer Mode

Well look at that- just when everyone had given up hope of Flappy Bird returning, condemning us all to an awful world full of soulless clones, creator Dong Nguyen has announced that a new version will be retuning to the App Store this August. What's more- this will be a new, improved version of the game.

Flappy Goat: Goat Simulator Gets A Flappy Bird Clone Of Its Own

According to a tweet from Kelly Evans at CNBC "Flappy Bird's Dong Nguyen: Flappy Bird is coming back. Multiplayer. August."

Back in March it was revealed via a Rolling Stone interview that Nguyen had plans to do it, and the reasoning behind him deleting the game in the first place. It turns out that the addictive nature of the game is what caused him concern- stories of people putting their lives on hold to play more Flappy Bird terrified him and as the Doctor Frankenstein of this project he decided to hunt down his own monster and kill it. Now with this new version perhaps things will be better, as he says the new version will be "less addictive".

Why Miss Flappy Bird When You Have The Lovecraftian Flapthulhu?

Of course, pretty much the only reason anyone played his silly game in the first place is its addictive nature. What brought you back was the futility of it all, trying over and over to get through these green pipes. Why? For a mesely high score? Why do we do it? Why, why?!?

(ahem) regardless, this version will have a multiplayer mode of some sort included, and you know how addictive multiplayer games can be.

It's just hard to imagine a game maker saying they want to make their game less addictive, is all. If you aren't compelled to play a game in the first place, why would you at all? Addictive nature is a good thing for games and just because a few insane people might take it to extremes should be of no concern to a designer. There are a lot worse things someone could be addicted to.

Anyway, welcome back, Flappy Bird. It's been too long. Now won't all of those people who spent thousands of dollars of iPads with the game installed feel silly.
