Super Smash Bros Pic of the Day Shows Off Actual Assist Trophy Item Before You Know Who's Inside

The last major Super Smash Bros. character reveal came in the form of a Nintendo Direct video, which showed off several new playable characters that would be joining the roster. We learned about newcomer Greninja, the water type from Pokemon X and Y, along with a few others.

The daily picture posts on the game's official website haven't been revealing as many details--at least not at once--as the Direct video did, but you can certainly rely on their consistency.

Today's image might not focus on a specific character, but rather, your portal to many of the non-playable characters in the game.

Series director Masahiro Sakurai, who posts the daily updates, often reveals new Assist Trophy characters--but now we're getting a look at the Assist Trophy itself, pictured above. Players don't know who will come out of the item before using it when it appears on the stage, and now we see what that will look like. Here's Sakurai's accompanying description:

"Pic of the day. This is the capsule for the Assist Trophies. It may emit rainbow-colored lights, or even blink. Even if there's something like a Color TV-Game 15 inside..."

Color TV-Game 15 is one of the recently revealed Assist Trophies, and there has been a multitude of other characters who could come out of the item announced. This includes Midna, Wonder Red, Dillon, and many others.

Keep checking back for more Super Smash Bros. news ahead of E3, which will hopefully include an early specific release date announcement.
