Papers Please Developer Lucas Pope Announces His Next Game, 1-Bit 'Return Of The Obra Dinn'

Lucas Pope, developer of the indie hit Papers, Please has announced his next game. Named Return of the Obra Dinn, the new project will be a 3D first-person mystery with 1-bit rendering.

Crytek Announces New MOBA Title, Arena Of Fate

Pope announced the title on Twitter, also linking to a forum post with a more thorough description of the setting and his vision. The game will take place in 1808 on an East India Company trading ship named Obra Dinn, thought to have been lost at sea when it set sail in 1802.

After mysteriously drifting into port with no crew 6 years later, it's up to the player as an insurance adjustor for the company to board the ship and recover the captain's logbook, according to the forum post.

Pope explained his development goals for the game, as well as a rough outline of what players can expect, even though there's plenty he's not ready to reveal.

"I want to challenge myself so this'll be a very different game from anything I've done before, including Papers Please. There'll be less creativity with the gameplay and instead I want to experiment with the rendering, story, and a few technical features. Right now I have only a rough idea about the narrative.

"I'm hoping to capture a compelling mystery with suspense and twists in the limited space of an old merchant sailing ship. It won't be the typical "collect items and look for clues" structure. There's a slightly cool gameplay hook but I won't go into details on that until much later."

Pope will be using Unity to develop the game, and says he will keep fans updated via a dev blog. He also explained that the 1-bit graphics are inspired by nostalgia for his first computer, a Mac Plus. It's very early in the game's development, so keep an eye out for more news on Return of the Obra Dinn in the future.
