'World of Warcraft' Movie Cast, Ben Foster Set To Play Mage Medivh In Upcoming Action Adventure

Warcraft Movie Cast, Ben Foster Set To Play Mage Medivh In Upcoming Action Adventure

Filming for Duncan Jones' Warcraft movie has wrapped and we are now finally getting some information from the set. Despite the size and anticipation of the movie, based on the biggest MMO in history, little detail is known about the actual plot of the film. We know that it's taking place before the events of World of Warcraft, focusing on the events that lead up to the sundering and the Dark Portal, but little else.

Actor Ben Foster, speaking with IGN, has illuminated some of his role. "The character in Warcraft that I play is named Medivh. He's a mage, which is essentially a sorcerer," Foster revealed. "He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle."

We know what a mage is Ben! Oh, you're helping out those less fortunate. Medivh is the last of a line of Guardians, who are tasked with protecting the world from the forces of the Burning Legion, which is essentially an army of space demons. In the games, Medivh is corrupted and aids the orc warlock Gul'dan in opening the Dark Portal, which brings forth the Legion onto the world.

That's how it goes in the games, but in the movie, Foster hints at a less black and white approach to the plot, "What's exciting about Duncan Jones' take on this video game is that it shows both sides of the war. It shows both sides of a conflict, which is exciting to me. It's not just a video game turned into a movie. It's asking, hopefully, an important question of, where do we limit our compassion for what we consider to be the bad guys?"

The Orcs in the original games were possessed of a blood rage given to them by the demons, subjugating the warrior race to the will of the evil starspawn. All of this could come into play, or it could not.

Foster also added that the FX work being done on the film is top notch. "The way that they're pushing motion-capture -- I just saw some of the test footage -- it's unlike anything I've ever seen. It's performance-capture. It pushes it to the next level. It's going to be one helluva 3D event."

All of these words are doubtlessly carefully rehearsed lines, this is a big budget action adventure, and the studio needs everyone on board, pumping this thing up, but I cannot help but feel a little shiver down my spine in thinking about seeing Warcraft up on the big screen at last. The film reaches theaters on March 11, 2016, but you can play World of Warcraft literally any time until then.
