'World of Warplanes' Update 1.4 Releases Today, New Maps, Planes, Matchmaking System; Stunning E3 Trailer [VIDEO]

Wargaming today launched the next major content patch for their popular aerial combat game World of Warplanes. as well as a stunningly cinematic trailer for E3. The update hit Russia and Europe today. North American clients will get it tomorrow, June 4.

Tanki Online Celebrates Five Years Of Heavy Artillery Mayhem

The update now lets players choose between the High Def and Standard Def versions of the game, allowing those with high end graphics cards to fully utilize the game client, while the SD version let's players who do not use the highest graphics quality settings or want to save space on their hard disk have a go at the combat. It's a smart, effective move on the part of Wargaming.

Update 1.4 also introduces a total of five new premium Tier VI fighters, each representing the five nations in the game: the Soviet Bell P-39Q-15 Airacobra fighter, German Supermarine Spitfire V DB 605, British North American Mustang Mk.I, Japanese Kawasaki Ki-88, and the American Grumman XP-50 heavy fighter. Players can use these new jets in one of two new maps, "The Hidden Airbase" which is open to players Tier VI and above.

World of Tanks Blitz E3 Programming

Wargaming has also massively redone the matchmaking algorithm in the game. Dubbed 'Matchmaking 2.0' the program now "ensures that the number of flight squads is equal among both teams and that the types and tiers of all planes on opposing sides are well-balanced." Players will also have a better chance of being matched up with similarly tiered allies and opponents, creating a more balanced, less rage-worthy experience for everyone.

Lastly, the update also introduces a second new map and the first battle to take place at night. "Lit up by the Northern Lights, Winter War will task players with fighting enemies in a dark and hazardous environment and is available for aircraft of tiers I to V." Now, I may decry the sneaky way in which Hollywood hides its SFX by putting all of its biggest battles at night, but a dogfight lit up by only the stars and the brief flare of falling planes sounds like something out of my wildest dreams.

You can sign up for World of Warplanes right now here. And be sure to watch the E3 trailer below. It is quite moving.
