'Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain' News: Trailer Sneaks Out Of E3 2014 [VIDEO]

Trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Sneaks Out Of E3

E3 is in full swing with Microsoft at the helm, but all manner of things are still sneaking in under the radar. Of course, Metal Gear Solid producer Konami is all about sneaky, so keeping with that theme, the company has let loose with the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain's Map Dwarfs the Maps of All Other MGS Games

While the MGS series has always managed to get away with a bit of humor here and there, this Phantom Pain trailer is about as dark as it gets. It begins pretty rough, and the dark lyrics of Mike Oldfield's "Nuclear" don't help make things any more chipper.

Big Boss and his Diamond Dogs crew, what's left of them, are recovering from the cataclysmic wipeout of their Outer Heaven facility. Then the late-80's action flick "training" montage kicks in, and the team starts getting things back into gear, but not all at once. Highlight include:

Kojima Unveils the Curtain on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain's Gameplay With First Gameplay Footage

- age progression on triple agent Ocelot, as well as the gunslinger getting a taste for torture
- a very nimble Quiet, jumping to and fro on enemies like another notable MGS grey haired vixen with a thing for ninjas
- hints at a team-up between Big Boss and Skull Face, resulting in the dissolution of Diamond Dogs, and the formation of a more villainous Outer Heaven, and a peek at the group's Metal Gear (look close, and Skull Face is also sporting an eye patch)

It's a lot to take in, but you can check out the whole thing below.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is set to release sometime next year for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
