Gearbox Software and 2K Games Announce Battleborn, A Brand New Co-op IP For Next-Gen Systems

Battlefield? Battlebots? Battlecry? Battlezone? Battlestar? Battlegrounds? Battleheart? No, silly- it's a brand new game called Battleborn

Gearbox and 2K announced the game this morning, promising another stellar co-op title from the house that built Borderlands

Battleborn is touted as an "ambitious fusion of genres", and will feature first-person shooting (natch. It's Gearbox) combined with stylized visuals and a group of diverse heroes. It's set in the future where robots appear to be rising up against our heroes, although fortunately one has defected to our side and donned a stylish hat.

Bethesda Announces BattleCry, A Free-To-Play 32-Player Multiplayer Which Almost Certainly Is Not Battleborn

“If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, who may or may not be a robot himself. “As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created.”

It will feature a narrative-driven co-op campaign and competitive multiplayer matches.

"Battleborn represents the combined might of the development and publishing teams behind the success of Borderlands 2, which to date has sold-in more than 9-million units worldwide and has become 2K's highest-selling game of all time," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "The size, scope, and ambition of Battleborn are unlike any other title in 2K's history, and the result is a defining next-gen co-operative experience."

Game Informer will have the exclusive look at Battleborn during their August issue, rationalizing the existence of Gamestop's rag for another month, so check there throughout July for carefully planned and scheduled marketing releases for the game.

Battleborn is already available for pre-order for those of you long-term planners, with the game set to release during Take-Two's fiscal year 2016, which ends March 31. It will hit Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Check the reveal trailer below- it's not gameplay just yet, but it is pretty.

Now, to try and remember which Battle game this is for the next two years...
