Marvel's Thor Gender-Swapped, Publisher Pulls A Rule 63: Identity Of Female Successor As Yet Unknown

Marvel Announces Gender Swap For Thor

In an announcement on The View earlier today, Marvel said their classic Silver Age hero Thor would be gender-swapped in his comic title soon.

Marvel Heroes 2015 MMO Launches, Adds Silver Surfer

".@Marvel announces that Thor is no longer worthy of Mjolnir, and now a woman will be wielding the mighty Uru Hammer!", the show stated on Twitter.

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. Thor debuted in 1962 as a secret identity character named Donald Blake, a paraplegic doctor who, when he grabbed his cane just so, he would transform into Norse thunder god Thor and his cane into magic hammer Mjolnir and fight stone men from Jupiter or bank robbers, depending on what day of the week it was. It was the 60s.

Marvel Distributes Free Hero Codes For Its MMO's Anniversary

It's been a while since the dual identity thing had really been an issue for Thor, with his own title mostly focusing on Thor being Thor and nobody making a big deal out of it. Hey, it's the Marvel Universe, those guys have Magnetos and Dr. Dooms doing ten 9/11s every other month. They're not gonna lose their crap over a thunder god walking the Earth, you know?

Marvel had the ladies of The View announce that Thor would soon be found unworthy of his hammer (presumably by his father Odin) and a woman would take up the mantle of Thor.

She'll apparently still be called Thor. A return to that whole "Donald Blake"-style Thor secret identity is kinda weird (especially since most people will know Thor from the movie where they barely even bothered with it) but sure, more women in comics! All we know is that New Thor will be a Midgardian (an Earthling) who has been saved by Thor in the past. Who's your money on?
