The Hunger Games movies have proven to Hollywood that big, expensive tentpole pictures with female leads are financially viable. Alright, it helps if Rule 63 Laurence Olivier Jennifer Lawrence is your star, but a sleepy Kristen Stewart didn't stop Twilight from making all the money. Let's hope studio bosses will take the message of the movies' boffo cumes as a sign to make more female-fronted blockbusters, rather than more generally dystopian ones.

The poster released for SDCC eschews most blockbusters' floating head or back-to-the-viewer styles (not even any flying debris) for a stylish stripped-down guerilla rebellion look, with the iconic Mockingjay symbol stamped several times over a Capitol Peacekeeper. Hopefully, this means the return of the really good shouting villain Peacekeeper Romulus Thread from Catching Fire.

Guardians of the Galaxy Clip Looking Funny & Awesome

The Hunger Games movies (and books) are a great reminder that geekdom is expanding beyond just pandering to an audience of the same old white males (like me) and that's a good thing. Cuz the thing is, I don't actually really like-like The Hunger Games. I think they're great on an intellectual and social level, but I just don't really connect with them viscerally. However, one cannot deny the actual filmmaking quality and popularity, and be glad that they're out there, serving the geek needs of those who don't always get catered to. It's a weird but good feeling!
