Shadowgate Remake Release Date Announced For Next Month, Side-By-Side Gameplay Trailer Highlights Improvements From NES

Shadowgate Remake Hitting Next Month!

It's nearly time to go back to castle Shadowgate! The re-imagining of the MacVenture/NES classic looks glorious, and it's coming next month.

Shadowgate Beta Currently Available To Anyone Who Pre-orders

Developer Zojoi in cooperation with indie games partner Reverb Triple XP announced today that Shadowgate will launch on Steam and other digital outlets for PC and Mac on August 21, 2014. iOS and Android gamers will be able to pick it up come Fall 2014.

This Kickstarter-funded version of the game is very similar to the original defining point-and-click adventure game. It still features that familiar first-person perspective, and has the same actions you have to click on in order to interact with the environment and explore the incredibly dangerous castle. You'll have to avoid dragons and other enemies, survive traps, complete puzzles, and ultimately assemble the Staff of Ages, a powerful relic capable of keeping an ancient enemy from destroying the entire world.

Grim Fandango Remake Coming To PC, Mac, And Linux- No Longer PS4 & Vita Exclusive

The original was tough and atmospheric as hell, even with the technical limitations of the time. To celebrate the remake's release they have cut a new trailer that offers a side-by-side comparison of the old game and the new. Check it out below to see how things have changed over the past 25 years. I mean, I guess it looks a little better, right?

I'm kidding of course. The art looks glorious, and with the promised improvements and additions to the game (read our exclusive interview here for all about that!) this will be the definitive Shadowgate experience.

Here's the full list of improvements to the game:

-All-new and updated puzzles seamlessly expand on the original game
-Multiple difficulty levels enable players to play on Master, the renowned difficulty of the original, or scale back the brutality with Apprentice (Easy) or Journeyman (Medium)
-Players can take advantage of a bevy of objects, spells, an all-new mapping system and on-screen commands to aid them in their quest
-Tons of hand-painted illustrated rooms feature both new and familiar locations
-Gorgeous visuals complete with new environmental effects and unique animations offer an immersive experience
-Bonus Retro Mode enables players to experience the game like it’s 1989! Choose Hiroyuki Masuno’s original NES score, turn the graphics into 8-bit, and more
-Customize the experience with the classic or auto-hide control layout, tailored key binds for actions and objects, and/or lock commands for ease of use
-Updated storytelling features dramatic cut-scenes, plus all the same great storytelling you'd expect from a Shadowgate adventure
-A digitally-orchestrated, dynamic soundtrack and sound effects change based on gameplay
-50 in-game and Steam-based achievements to find and unlock

Till next month!
