NimbleTV App Brings Live Television Streaming to Your iPad, Android Device or Roku

NimbleTV Rolls Out In New York and Chicago, More to Come

The free NimbleTV app lets you stream live television from almost any device. The service just rolled out in Chicago after being a New York City-only project. The company plans to bring the service to nine more cities before the end of the year.

The app is different from some earlier similar attempts because it requires you to register with your cable subscription. The app is cloud-based and now free-it used to require a $5 monthly DVR fee. NimbleTV is unaffiliated with any single cable company and it works on desktops, iPads, iPhones, Android devices, Roku and Apple TV.

Once you're logged in, you can browse and stream just as if you were sitting on your living room couch. You can even record live television with its DVR-like record function.

NimbleTV is hoping to succeed legitimately where so many others have fallen due to wars with the cable companies. Television streaming service Aereo recently lost a Supreme Court battle with broadcasters, a ruling which effectively shut down the company's entire business strategy. NimbleTV is trying to avoid a similar fate by playing nice with the media moguls.

In the New York area, you can use NimbleTV for free if you're a subscriber to Cablevision, Verizon FiOS, Time Warner, or RCN. In Chicago, you have to be hooked up with Comcast Xfinity or AT-T U-verse. The company did not provide specific details on when the app would be available elsewhere.
