LG Round Smartwatch Announced: 'G Watch R' Runs On Google's Android Wear

LG Officially Announces the G Watch R

LG pulled back the curtain on their G Watch R smartwatch--and it looks extra smart. The stylish watch is one of the few entries running on the new Android Wear right now, which is Google's new mobile operating system for wearables (but not, apparently, for their Glass headset).

New Smartwatch from Samsung Takes Calls From Your Wrist Without A Connected Phone

While the G Watch R is causing Android fans to salivate, they have to be a little patient. The South Koreans are placing a launch date somewhere in the fourth quarter of this year, so probably sometime in October.

Unlike smartwatches being released by companies like Samsung or Pebble, LG's entry is round, much more like a traditional wristwatch. This seems to be a pattern with the devices running Android Wear--Motorola's smartwatch, the Moto 360, is also round, and gained plaudits for its apperance upon the reveal. While Samsung just announced the Gear S smartwatch with a curved display, there's still a squarish element to the design.

SmartGlass Update Includes Game DVR and Threaded Messaging

The G Watch R seems focused on fitness--it's dust and water resistance, and features a gyroscope and motion-sensing accelerator. Like an old school weather station, it puts a barometer right on your wrist in order to detect temperature.

LG claims the watch includes a series of the company's own apps, as well as everything available in the Android Wear app ecosystem.

Expect even more smartwatches to come this fall; rumor has it that Apple will finally reveal their "iWatch" in coming weeks.
