Samsung Reveals Smartphone-Powered VR Headset, Runs Software From Oculus, Available This Year

Samsung Revealed A VR Headset That Uses A Smartphone As The Screen And Runs Using Oculus' Software

The virtual reality market is slowly becoming less and less exclusive. Oculus is still the first name in VR headsets, but Sony has also thrown its hat into the ring recently with their Project Morpheus. Now, tech giant Samsung is getting into the game with a new accessory for their Galaxy Note 4 smartphone.

The Gear VR is a new virtual reality headset from Samsung that actually functions as an accessory to the new Galaxy Note 4. Users are able to pop their Note 4 into the goggles and have a virtual reality set-up ready to go. Buttons to control the headset are located within easy reach on the side and are intuitive enough that learning to operate them while flying blind is not a problem. The device is also entirely wireless, so you won't be tethered to anything while you watch movies or play games.

The Gear VR, which Samsung says will be available later this year, is powered by software from industry leader Oculus, which means the device already has the benefit of Oculus' years of experience experimenting with this kind of technology.

Samsung Launches New Audio Line To Compete With Beats

Geoffrey Fowler over at the Wall Street Journal got some valuable hands-on time with the device and was able to point out some of the Gear VR's triumphs and some of its shortcomings as well. On one hand, the headset doesn't come with earpieces, so your media's audio blasts out of the Note 4's speaker for everyone to hear. Samsung does say that the device can be used with a wireless earpiece, though that is still just another piece to buy. On the other hand, the impressive pixel density offered by the Galaxy Note 4 gives the headset good display quality, better at least than early models of the Rift.
