LG G Watch R Releases On Google Play, $299 Smartwatch Puts It At The Expensive End Of Android Wear Devices

LG's G Watch R Hits Google Play With An Ambitious Price Tag

LG's new G Watch R smartwatch, the company's second Android Wear device, is now available for purchase on Google Play for $299, placing it on the high end of Android Wear watch costs.

The primary draw of the G Watch R is that it looks like a traditional watch when you're not using it to check your texts. Its circular body is more traditionally fashionable than the rectangular devices that populate the smartwatch market.

A few more little touches – like the minute markers around the outside of the screen and the winding wheel on one side – make the G Watch R the perfect smartwatch to go incognito if you're in a professional setting and don't want people to know you're wearing a smartphone extension on your wrist. When it's not in use, the G Watch R is fairly good at looking like a normal watch.

The G Watch R's price tag is also notable, though not necessarily in a good way. The watch's $299 price makes it the most expensive Android Wear device on Google Play at the moment. Many watches hover around the $250 price point, and this includes the Moto 360, the other round Android Wear watch. The Moto 360 has proven to be the watch to beat among Android Wear's freshman class of devices. Charging more than the Moto 360 is an ambitious strategy, so we'll have to see how well the G Watch R fares.

LG's first Android Wear device was the original G Watch, released in the summer as a launch product for Google's wearable operating system. That watch is still available for $229.
