Survival horror as a genre has blossomed over the last few years, with several studios setting out to prove that they can provide the best jump scares and foreboding atmospheres. All of these games, though, have the original Resident Evil to thank for laying the groundwork for the survival horror archetype. Now, players can head back to the genre's roots while, at the same time, enjoying the enhanced and updated graphics made possible by today's consoles.

When January 20 rolls around, Resident Evil will be available for $19.99 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. The remake will be sold as a digital download.

Capcom also released some new gameplay footage from the PC version of the remake, running at a glorious 60fps. You can catch the full gameplay video below. It shows off an early scene from the game starring series icons Jill Valentine and Barry Burton, the latter of whom will actually appear in the next iteration of the series, Resident Evil: Revelations 2.

As the video shows, this next-gen remake has put a fine polish on all of the game's visuals while maintaining the antiquated quirks that give the game its classic charm. A next-gen game probably doesn't need those door animations to give it time to load rooms, but they're still kept in for old times' sake.
