Oppo Releases Thinnest HD Smartphone In The World: Oppo R5 Reviews, Unboxing Videos Coming Out

The Oppo R5 Is The Thinnest HD Smartphone In The World

Back in October, China's Oppo Electronics announced the Oppo R5, the thinnest HD smartphone in the world. Though the U.S. isn't within the phone's original launch region, reviews and unboxing videos have started popping up across the web, showing off what the R5 has to offer.

CES 2015 Preview: What To Expect From Sony, Samsung And Others

The Oppo R5 sits at just 4.85 millimeters thick, giving it a form factor unlike any other smartphone out there. But the phone's thickness isn't its only impressive spec. The phone supports a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution. It sports a 13 MP camera (which actually protrudes a little bit) on the rear of the device and a 5 MP camera on the front. The phone doesn't break any records in terms of its innards – it packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage – but it's still impressive what they were able to pack into the slim body.

In fact, the Oppo R5 is so slim that it can't support a traditional 3.5mm audio jack. If you want to use headphones with your device, you'll need to use the 3.5mm-to-USB adapter included in the box.

A couple of news outlets were able to get their hands on the Oppo R5, giving us a look at the niche device. Business Insider has published several pictures that really showcase the phone's slim profile while they work on their review. Android Authority has a full review up, though their takeaways seem mixed. Apparently, some of the hardware shortcomings that no doubt were products of the drive to make a phone thinner than 5 millimeters – like an unimpressive camera and poor battery – take away from the phone's great design.

Finally, Phandroid published an unboxing video of both the R5 and the Oppo N3, which you can watch below (skip to 4:50 to get to the R5).
