Apple Names iOS Games Of The Year: Monument Valley And Threes Take Top Honors For 2014

Monument Valley And Threes Named iOS Games Of The Year By Apple

Apple's list of Best Apps of 2014 is now up on its App Store, and it includes the list of the top iOS games of the year. It's been a solid year for mobile games, and the winners shouldn't be too big a surprise. Threes! has been named top iPhone game, and Monument Valley takes the prize for iPad games.

Hearthstone's Latest Expansion Goes Live

Threes! is an adorable and charming puzzle game that has players combining number blocks together in order to create bigger and bigger numbers. The entire game takes place on a four-by-four gride where the only characters are the number blocks that spawn. Players clear space on the grid by combining two blocks with the same number together to make one new block with twice the number value. It's a game whose concept can be picked up within a minute or two, but the combination of a challenging puzzle and adorable aesthetic makes it a tough game to put down.

Monument Valley takes puzzle platforming to a new level with its brilliant use of forced perspective. The player is tasked with shepherding a princess through Escheresque levels while manipulating the world to suit their needs. It's a game that requires some serious lateral thinking, and the smart level design makes diving into one level after another exciting. The game also recently received an expansion pack filled with new stages.
