3DS software is up more than 40 percent compared to this time last year, due largely in part to the success of the two new Pokemon games. Super Smash Bros for 3DS is the other main piece of the puzzle for Nintendo's impressive sales numbers: the title has also moved 1.5 million units, becoming the best-selling portably game in 2014.

The Wii U is seeing software success as well, also on the back of the Super Smash Bros series: the console version has sold nearly 710,000 combined units since launching on Nov. 21. The physical sales numbers are provided by NPD Group, while the digital sales come from internal Nintendo statistics.
