Assassin's Creed Unity Patch 4 Problems: Update Is 40 GB For Xbox One Owners, Patch Brings Back Texture Pop-In Issues
Assassin's Creed Unity's Patch 4 set out to clear up all of the major remaining issues that players have been griping about since launch. Now, though, it seems that there are problems arising with the patch itself, especially for Xbox One owners.
Not long after Patch 4 went live, Ubisoft posted an update that Xbox One owners were seeing a staggering 40 GB update in their downloads instead of the (still formidable) 6.7 GB patch that was supposed to go out. As we learned yesterday, Patch 4 is supposed to replace a lot of the locations in the game's Paris map with more efficient versions to cut down on frame rate issues. According to Ubisoft, though, a download glitch on the Xbox One is causing the patch to replace the entire game instead of just the relevant files, leading to a 40 GB update.
Ubisoft is reportedly working with Microsoft to get this issue sorted out. In the meantime, they've identified a workaround for Xbox One owners with a retail version of the game. If you uninstall the game from your console then pop in the Unity retail disc, the game should start downloading the normal 6.7 GB patch.
Players who have successfully downloaded the patch have also reported that texture and NPC pop-in issues have become worse with the patch. One user on the Ubisoft forums said that, after the patch, NPCs have started popping in a few meters away from the player. A user over on NeoGAF then posted a gif of the same issue, with NPCs popping in right beside Arno. The gif also shows that Ubisoft has added in a little animation for when NPCs do pop in, making the bug seem more like a quirk of the in-universe Helix program.
Patch 4 rolled out yesterday for PS4 and Xbox One users. PC owners can expect to get the patch sometime this week. Assassin's Creed Unity is now available for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
