Dark Souls DSFix Mod Taken Down By Bandai Namco, May Have Been A Mistake

Bandai Namco yesterday demanded the removal a popular mod for Dark Souls, requesting that Dropbox pull Durante's DSFix.

A more recent update from Eurogamer reports that, according to a NeoGAF user, the takedown was a mistake. The publisher had apparently hired File Defense Service (FDS) to protect its property by removing debug mode patches, which wrongly included DSFix. According to the user, who said he contacted Volker Rieck from FDS, Bandai Namco are in discussions to restore DSFix online as a result of this supposed mistake.

This NeoGAF post is the only report of this, however, and is unconfirmed at this time--all we know for sure is that the publisher has currently blocked access to the mod, though a mistake would explain why it was suddenly pulled all this time later. The mod made a huge impact on the PC version of the game, almost becoming almost essential for many users. The original PC port offered a paltry 1024x720 resolution, not an upgrade on the console edition, muddying the PC experience. DSFix solved the problem, though it remains surprising that the best and only fix for this had to come from a user.

Durante, the creator of the mod, posted on NeoGAF himself when he first received notice that DSFix was being blocked under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. He shared the email that had been sent his way, and offered his confused thoughts on the situation:

"This is utter bullshit of course, especially since DSfix does not include any of their material. I'm actually amazed that they would do this. I mean WTF."

He later edited his post to share the information above about FDS's mistake--hopefully this all gets resolved quickly.
