The Green Bay Packers Are Addicted To Settlers Of Catan

Settlers of Catan is a board game that has captured the attention of thousands for around two decades, but did you expect that to include a dozen or more players from the Green Bay Packers?

According to a Wall Street Journal story, the NFL team's locker room is absolutely addicted to the German-designed strategy game. For roughly the past two months, players regularly settle in for long nights playing the game--and they apparently take it quite seriously.

"I was just trying to play some music-some Pearl Jam, and [Bakhtiari] wouldn't let me," said Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn. "He wanted to hear the players talk and strategize. He was very serious," Flynn said. "They take it to a different level."

Tight end Justin Perillo said that the team is "completely addicted" to Settlers, and they're happy to acknowledge it's a fairly geeky endeavor. As anyone who has played the game knows, tempers can flare and competition is fierce--in a group as competitve as a sports team, Settlers is practically an incindiary grenade.

"Everyone is super competitive, so when you first start playing they don't tell you all the rules," center Garth Gerhart explained. "So you start your moves and they say 'well, actually you can't do that' and it sort of screws you in the game. They get very salty."

Not exactly a level playing field for new players, but all is fair in Settlers and war. The group sees the game as a good alternative to cold, slow nights of Green Bay living--the Wisconson city is the smallest market in he NFL. Good on the Packers for finding such an entertaining, somewhat unusual diversion!
