Atari Announces 'Asteroids: Outpost': The Open World Sandbox Remake You Never Knew You Always Wanted [SCREENS]
This just in: Asteroids, the classic video game of a tiny triangular spaceship shooting large white amorphous shapes into smaller amorphous shapes. It's one of the all-time greats: easy, simple, and at last, it's coming back.
Hold on. Sorry. Wait-they're doing what? 3D visuals? An open world sandbox game? So, do we still get to shoot down asteroids? What do you mean 'sort of'? Either you do or you don't!
Atari today has announced the upcoming game Asteroids: Outpost, a modern reimagining of the original Asteroids. I think we should call it Asteroids: The Grim 'N' Gritty Edition.
In the distant future, mankind has spread to the heavens and with it, our insatiable lust for resources. With other worlds short on supplies, we look towards the drifting rocks of space, the asteroids, to fuel civilization. In the new open world sandbox game, you blast off to take down and essentially strip mine the rock from the Asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
"Ambitious prospectors blast off with little more than an Outpost Module and a Mining Tool, to tear the hide off these asteroids and find their fortunes. This bonanza doesn't come without risks. Mere survival is a daily struggle. Asteroid storms bombard the surface, destroying Outposts, and hostile claim jumpers can appear at any moment. "
You can forge alliances, fend off warring factions, explore the vastness of space and make a killing in the process. Or be killed trying, at the least.
"Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari's portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we're looking forward to ushering the game into today's digital gaming era," Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said in a release. "We're paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay. Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs."
Remember the last time we took a simple and beloved classic and grafted on some sci-fi action rigamarole? Oh yes: BATTLESHIP.
Asteroids: Outpost will hit Steam Early access soon.
