PlayStation Vue News: Service Launches On PS4 And PS3 As Cable Alternative, Offers Live TV, DVR, And Movies

PlayStation Vue Television Service Launches On PS4 And PS3 In Select Cities, Offers Live TV, DVR, And Movies

Sony's PlayStation Vue has launched today, bringing another cloud-based television service option to customers. Vue offers live television, cloud DVR, and video on demand for $49.99 per month.

Cord-Cutting TV Service Sling Launches Exclusively On Xbox One

The service is has only launched in New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia so far, but brings live television shows, sports, and movies to PlayStation consoles. Both PS4 and PS3 are compatible, and the idea is that you can drop your cable subscription and still get all live TV content in one place, on one device.

$49.99 isn't cheap compared to options like Netflix and Hulu Plus, but PlayStation Vue does offer a good deal more in terms of features and should be a good amount cheaper than physical cable subscriptions. It's entirely live television across a variety of networks, DVR that lets you store episodes for 28 days, and is set up both to keep your favorites front and center, and to easily recommend you new shows.

The base package is missing some channels, and ABC and ESPN are noticeably absent from any of the payment plans (Disney must not be on board). There are good stations in addition to all of the basic cable channels, including TNT, NBCSN, Food Network, HGTV, Comedy Central, TBS, USA, FX, TLC, and more.

PS Plus Holding Free Online Multiplayer Weekend

The $59.99 "Core" plan adds local sports support, Big Ten Network, NBC Golf, and Turner Classic Movies. The $69.99 "Elite" plan offers the full complement of channels, adding Nat Geo Wild, a variety of MTV stations, Boomerang, Fox College Sports, and a few more niche choices. You can see all of these plan details on the website.
