Elite Dangerous Surprise Launched On Steam Today, Existing Owners Hoping For Gift Codes

Elite: Dangerous has unexpectedly been made available on Steam today, despite signs that the title was only going to be available directly from the developer.

Sunset Overdrive DLC 'Dawn Of The Rise Of The Fallen Machines' Out Now

The multiplayer, open world space game released in December on PC to critical and commercial success following a Kickstarter campaign. The game has recently release in beta form on Mac and will be a timed exclusive on Xbox One sometime this year before coming to PS4.

There are no trading cards or Steam achievements available at the time being. The game's executive producer, Michael Brooks, said "we'll see" about adding those features in the future on the official forums. You can add Elite: Dangerous to your Steam library like you would any non-Steam game, but this does not allow you to review the game, count hours played, etc.

Eastside Hockey Manager Early Access Launches On Steam From Football Manager Devs

Cross-buy is still in play for either the direct or Steam version of the game, meaning you'll be given access to the game for PC and Mac (when it launches) regardless of how you buy the title. Perhaps the developers will come through with a Steam key for early supporters soon--the developers will "look into it".

The sudden release has some fans feeling left hanging, and at a disadvantage for showing early support. Kickstarter backers and fans who followed since launch were never given reason to believe the game would be coming to Steam, and so most of them purchased it separately, away from Steam integration and the rest of their library. Hopefully for them, Frontier will decide to send out those codes.
