Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse 2015 Pictures: Here Are The Best Photos From This Weekend's Rare Cosmic Event

Here Are Some Of The Best Photos From This Weekend's 'Blood Moon' Lunar Eclipse

This past Saturday, the first of two lunar eclipses in 2015 provided some amazing views from our planet. The moon was dimmed, partially obscured, and at some points took on a red glow that has been dubbed the "blood moon". Below is a gallery of these images from around the world taken on April 4 and provided by Getty.

The first set of images come from Los Angeles, California. In the first picture, photographer David McNew captured the moon behind downtown high-rise buildings before dawn. The eclipse will be the shortest of the century, with the moment of totality lasting only about five minutes. The Getty caption explains that the eclipse is particularly brief because the moon is passing through the upper part of the Earth's circular shadow rather than across the middle, which would have made it last longer.

The next two images were taken by Phil Walter in Auckland, New Zealand. These are some of the brighest and boldest of the blood moon phase of the eclipse, which again lasted just a few minutes.

These last images were taken by Ethan Miller in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Getty caption explains this is the third in a lunar tetrad - four consecutive total lunar eclipses with no partial lunar eclipses in between them. The orange glow of the moon is a result of sunlight scattered off Earth's atmosphere, giving way to the blood moon nickname. The next full lunar eclipse will occur on Sept. 27-28, 2015.
