Injustice: Gods Among Us - "Our Superman isn't quite the same Superman that you grew up with"

It's been great watching the iconic denizens of the DC universe pummel the living bejesus out of each other, but I can't help but wonder, why? I get the motivation for villains like Harley and Solomon Grundy (hint: they're bad guys), but what's the logic for Supes to pummel his buddy Batman, some new kind of kryptonite? Why's Nightwing electrocuting the Flash, is he under the influence of Starro? Is Wonder Woman slicing up Cyborg because she has issues with a patriarchal society?

Probably not, but Injustice's creative director of Kombat fame Ed Boon has teased us with a few crumbs of the storyline for Injustice: Gods Among Us. In a recent interview with Playstation blog, Boon claimed that the acclaimed Kryptonian is a central part of the story: "Our Superman isn't quite the same Superman that you grew up with. We definitely want to give a more contemporary, NetherRealms spin to the character, and he plays a big part in the story."

Superman's always been a bit of a boy scout, but as Boon notes, "There are a lot of interpretations that have happened over the years, and we are definitely giving a more complex Superman for this game...there are definitely dimensions that we're adding to our twist on Superman."

Those who may find the DC characters a bit lacking should be happy to know that Boon plans on introducing a few characters you might not expect. "With Mortal Kombat, we brought in crazy guests like Freddy Krueger. So we'll definitely want to introduce unexpected characters [via DLC] to Injustice. That'll be our strategy. It's comparable to Mortal Kombat, but being really aggressive with our DLC characters."

So far, we've seen a decent selection of DC characters, but they only seem to be a part of the total roster. According to the game's presentation at this year's EVO, there will be at least 24 playable characters and 15 arenas. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few other Leaguers like Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter. And what would a fighting game featuring the man of tomorrow and the caped crusader be if they couldn't go up against Lex Luthor and the Joker? But their possible involvement in the game remains to be seen.

We'll keep up the coverage on Injustice: Gods Among US as more information become available.
