Mass Effect 3 was the first to take a beating from upset gamers who claimed the ending lacked any variation. Now, it seems the heat has turned to a game that has yet to be released, and developers are all ears for the negative comments.
This time IO Interactive developed Hitman Absolution, which came out with its trailer "Attack of the Saints," has sparked outrage and controversy for its "sexiest portrayal of women." The trailer was titillating, sexy, and fast. The fans were outraged by the fact that the video produced by Square Enix's CGI studio Visual Works lacked any characterization and was too brash in its approach that main character, Agent 47, was a gun-toting hero like in any other game.
"We learned from the trailer that we really needed to give these characters some context and some backstory," said Tore Blystad, game director IO Interactive. "We're working within the game - within that level - to build these characters up before you meet them. That way you know what you're getting and you aren't put off by them."
The outcome of the femme fatales-in-nun-disguise was obvious. It would have helped if IO Interactive was more creative and had a subtler ending.
"We were surprised by the reaction to it," Blystad said about the game's trailer. "We've been trying to find out, y'know, how could we not see this happening? If we knew it would get such a negative reaction we would have done it in a different way.
"There will have been so long between the trailer coming out and the game being released that people will have forgotten about it."
It is very evident that Hitman fans will have some expectations for their favorite game. These days most game developers push to see to that their hardcore gamers are happy.
