Microsoft's New Logo: Company Revamps Iconic Windows (See Photos of Past Logos)

Microsoft gets a new look after 25 years.

The multinational company announced on Thursday it will change in its corporate logo.

Jeff Meisner, general manager for brand strategy at Microsoft said in a blog post that the company is "exited" about its new products, it will be introduced this year as new produts like the Surface tablets, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Xbox services, and new version of Office hit the market.

"You will see a common look and feel across these products providing a familiar and seamless experience on PCs, phones, tablets and TVs," Meisner said.

The company said the logo has two aspects, the symbol has four squares with the colors red, green, yellow, and blue which "expresses the company's diverse portfolio of products" and logotype, that is the word 'Microsoft' written in Segoe font and uses it on its products as well as in all of its marketing communications.

eWeek reported that the company protects its logo assets. The Segoe font is unavailable in the Microsoft Word's fonts menu. A new logo for the upcoming Windows 8 operating system was also released. The new symbol "signal(s) the heritage but also signal(s) the future - a newness and freshness," Jeff Hansen, Microsoft's general manager of brand strategy told The Seattle Times.

Barbara Kahn, professor of marketing at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania said the logo was instant communication of the brand, and it needs to be "distinctive, clearly identified with the brand and consistently used over time" to The Seattle Times.

This new logo is the fifth in the series of logos that the company has used over the years, the first one was used from 1975 to 1979.

The squares resemble the "Modern UI design" which was previously referred as Metro UI. Last month Windows launched its new webmail, Outlook.com. Windows 8 will be available in stores starting Oct 26.
