Samsung vs. Apple Lawsuit Verdict: Tim Cook Praises Patent Victory in Company Memo

Employees at 1 Infinite Loop will be happy with the verdict of the San Jose court that ruled in favor of technology giant Apple over the patent infringement case against Samsung.

Tim Cook, Apple CEO sent out a memo after the verdict to his employees stating "Today was an important day for Apple and for innovators everywhere."

In the memo, Cook points out that his company hesitantly took the legal route after Samsung did not stop copying their work despite asking them not to.

According to Cook, Apple is not interested in monetary gains or patents via the lawsuit, but the lawsuit was about values of originality and innovation. Cook stressed that Apple employees give their all to make the "best products on earth," which is done for the company's customers to be "delighted" and not for rivals to copy these products.

Cook thanked the jury for their time and patience and said that he is "very proud" of the work done at Apple. He said "values have won and I hope the whole world listen."

Apple won its claim of Samsung copying elements from its iPad and iPhone. Samsung was ordered to pay damages of $1.05 billion to Apple. Apple originally demanded for $2.5 billion from its South Korean rival. Samsung had counter sued for $399 million.

"While a billion [dollars] is significant, Samsung has the balance sheet to cover it," patent lawyer Demetrios Anaipakos, told The Washington Post. "What's more substantial is an injunction. If Samsung is required to pull devices off the market, that will be much more expensive."

Bloomberg reported that Apple and Samsung combined make up for more than half of global smartphone sales. About 22.7 million smartphones and tablets have been sold by Samsung which has been claimed by Apple as its own technology.

The lawsuit was filed in April 2011 by the California-based company.
