iOS 10 Latest News and Rumors: Differential Privacy, Data Sharing Optional

iOS 10 was formally introduced at WWDC 2016 and Apple fans finally got a glimpse of things to come.

All that was led by the first thing that Apple users will see, the iOS 10 Lock screen. Such signals the big changes that the iOS 10 will be bringing in with a whole lot more.

Other features to look out for include that of better (bolder) fonts, the need to ‘press’ rather than ‘slide’ the unlock button, a ‘raise to wake’ functionality, a new way to access the camera when the screen is locked and an improved notification center as enumerated on 9to5Mac.

The truth on Differential Privacy

The new iOS 10 features will be something to look forward to though there are some reservations in the aid tied up with the ‘differential privacy’ that comes along with it.

Seen as a new tactic by Apple to get into the AI game as mentioned by Cult Of Mac, the ploy is seen as something that would require users to share data so that Apple could make good suggestions.

Seeing the issue of privacy as a big issue, Apple however clarified that the differential privacy feature will be optional.

This means that users can opt in (or out) aside from the fact that it will be limited to four specific iOS 10 system functions.

That would include new words added to the local dictionary, emojis, deep links within apps and lookup hints on ‘Notes’.

The four features of iOS 10 reportedly being safeguarded by Apple per Apple Insider, a concept that introduces "noise" into big data so that broad trends can be analyzed without making it possible to identify individual sources.

Apple is venturing out into something with the iOS 10 that Google tried in the past. While the search engine giant tried differential privacy, the Cupertino company is the first to try it on a wider scale.

Hence, the decision to participate on personal data sharing will still fall at the user’s hands. It all takes place once iOS 10 is officially out, believed to be in the Fall.
