'Skullgirls' Release Date, News & Update: New Android And iOS Version With RPG And Card Elements! Other Game Details, Features Revealed [VIDEO]

If you're a fan of the 2012 old-school 2D fighting game "Skullgirls," then rejoice: the game is coming to Android and iOS pretty soon.

According to Polygon, mobile developer Hidden Variable Studios has decided to go beyond porting "Skullgirls" to mobile, as it's giving the game a pretty considerable overhaul when it comes to how it plays. If the studio has been quiet for the past couple of years, it's because the team has been working on this port.

The mobile "Skullgirls" is going to include card game elements through a lot of different variations of its diverse and infinitely interesting cast of female characters (probably something akin to "Injustice: Gods Among Us" and its roster of differently-skinned characters represented through cards). According to Hidden Variable, this is to make the game even more casual than it is.

Interestingly, "Skullgirls" for mobile will also include elements of tactical turn-based strategy games—in a fighting game. The feature, called "Fight Assist," completely changes the way "Skullgirls" is played by letting players choose the next move instead of inputting commands in real time.

"I think hardcore fans of the console game will really love the way we've captured the essence of fighting gameplay in a simpler, mobile-friendly package," shared Charley Price, one of Hidden Variable's co-founders and the creative director of "Skullgirls."

"Skullgirls" was first released by Konami (in partnership with Autumn Games) back in 2012 for almost all platforms—originally for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 through the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. A PC version for Windows dropped in 2013, and an updated version, "Skullgirls Encore," dropped for Playstation 4 and the PS Vita in 2014.

"Skullgirls" mobile goes live on closed beta today, and those interested in trying out can sign up over at Hidden Variable's website. Check out the teaser video over here:
