"Destiny 2" Rumors & News: More NPC Stories In The Game

Developer Bungie Studios is looking for ways to improve on "Destiny" and make the franchise bigger and better, and one of the approaches they're looking into is expanding the roles and stories of certain NPCs in "Destiny 2."

In an interview with GamesBeat, Bungie's game director Scott Taylor expounded on the ideas they were throwing around for future "Destiny" games (both expansions and sequels), including writing up bigger stories for certain supporting characters in the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter. This follows players' criticism that "Destiny"'s backstory took a backseat to the actual gameplay, and that players would have to learn about the story through the in-game encyclopedia.

The characters he mentioned as examples were Xur and the Cryptarch—two innocuous but definitely enigmatic side characters that have a lot of potential for a fully fleshed-out backstory in "Destiny 2."

"We're trying to create these opportunities, and then the expansions are a great place to dive in," Taylor stated in the interview, which was mostly about the original "Destiny." It's certainly possible that we're going to see this in "Destiny 2," as Bungie's already applying this philosophy in their "Destiny" expansion releases.

For example, the upcoming "Rise of Iron" expansion pack in September this year will be mostly about Lord Saladin, another character who was just a vendor NPC with the Iron Banner in "Destiny." Or that of NPC Cayde-Six in last year's expansion "Taken King," who started out as a mere class trainer NPC.

So far, there still isn't any specific news on when "Destiny 2" is coming out, as the game did not show up at all on this year's E3 last month. The game is still targeted for a release sometime in 2017, and we'll update you as we get some more information.
