One of the hottest genres of video games currently trending is multiplayer online battle arena. Gaming giants Valve and Blizzard are making MOBAs.
MOBA is a strategic combat between teams of players across a battlefield that is fiercely contested. Each player or team of players will have their own character, which they can lead an army of computer-controlled drones to fight for them.
The essence of the game is strategy and teamwork. The genre is gaining popularity and has become an attraction in pro-gaming tournaments.
There have been successful MOBA games like League of Legends.
Kotaku reports that MOBA genres are almost non-existent in gaming consoles. Xbox 360 has Monday Night Combat by Microsoft Studios that is an MOBA. The gaming website reports that PS3 will be getting Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault. The site got an opportunity to check out the new game, and felt it was as confusing as the first session of League of Legends.
The game is now available in public beta version. As with other MOBAs, players choose a hero from the game and plays against others. There are three phases:
Recon: Where players can explore the battlefield; and the best weapons and big money is hidden in the trickiest places on the map. In this phase, various nodes on the maps can be attacked and captured.
Squad: Here, players can build defenses over the captured nodes and teleport back to the home base. Defenses with better turrets and barriers have to be paid for and players can also buy minions in this round.
Assault: The third phase is where the actual siege over enemy bases begins. The first side with bases completely destroyed loses, and the match cycles back to the Recon phase.
Kotaku reports the game differs from traditional MOBAs, as it is played at ground level and not overhead, like in regular MOBAs. There is a display of firepower and as the game builds up, it gets massive with tanks and robots.
If the game can improve its flow, it might be PlayStation 3s League of Legends, Kotaku reports. The game will be available this fall for downloads to PS3 and PS Vita.
