'Civilization 6' Latest News, Release Date & Update: How the New Game is a Departure From 'Civilization 5'

Back in 2010, Firaxis Games launched the fifth installment of their "Civilization" series, much to warm reviews from critics and gamers alike.

"Civilization 5" presented an improved combat system, and featured the removal of religion and espionage, both of which were brought back later in various expansions. In 2012, the expansion pack "Civilization 5: Gods & Kings" was released, followed by "Civilization 5: Brave New World" in 2013.

This October, gamers will finally get their hands on "Civilization 6," which features several differences from its previous iteration. For instance, the developers noticed that throughout all five games from the "Civilization" series, gamers only followed a pre-determined path towards improving their civilizations. This is not the case with "Civilization 6." Instead, improvements aren't concentrated within the main city space, but also near certain terrains, in which bonuses are given once improvements are done in those areas.

This method was called the "unstacking" of cities, as discussed by lead designer Ed Beach with Gamespot last month. According to him, their initial goal was to change the way the landscape affected one's game because in the fifth iteration, gamers were forced to create cities based on the given resources in a terrain. However, with the "unstacking" of cites, the gamer is given more options on what to build in a particular area. Beach shared that in "Civilization 6," those who build campuses will be given adjacency bonuses, such as mountains and jungle.

Another thing that factors into how "Civilization 6" is a departure from its previous iteration is its visuals. It seems to have more of a 2D cartoon like aesthetic compared to "Civilization 5," but Firaxis claims that what may lack in visuals, makes up in content, which promises to be deeper. In fact, the new visuals enable better gameplay for players because it enables them to easily recognize units and buildings when zoomed out.

"Civilization 6" is due out on October 21 for Windows PC, OS X, and Linux. In the meantime, visit civilization.com for the latest on the upcoming game.
