Barnes & Noble Unveil New Nook Products to Challenge Amazon's Kindle Fire

This holiday season will see a crowded tablet market. Barnes & Noble recently released a new line of refurbished Nook tablets - Nook HD and Nook HD+.

Nook HD has a 7-inch screen and costs $199 for 8GB storage space and $249 for 16GB. Nook HD+ has a 9-inch screen and is priced at $269 and $349 for 16GB and 32GB respectively.

Both the Nook tablets are set to challenge Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 7, costing $199 and Kindle Fire HD 8.9, costing $299. The new Nook tablets are cheaper than its rivals.

Google's Nexus 7 has a 7-inch screen and it has been rumored that Apple has plans of introducing an iPad Mini that will also have a 7-inch screen.

The older Nook Color and Nook tablets will be phased out, USA Today reported. Barnes & Noble has also announced a new Nook video movie and TV rental and purchase service, which will be available this fall.

Users can store their movies on Nook Cloud. Compatible physical Blu-rays and DVDs can be integrated into Nook's digital-video collections.

The new Nooks are lighter and have better HD screen and graphics. The audio also gets better, supporting HD movies of TV shows. It has dual-stereo speakers.

Nook HD has a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixel outputting 720p; with a battery support for up to 10.5 hours of reading and 9 hours of video. It comes with a built-in Wi-Fi and HDMI port and an expandable microSD slot.

Nook HD+ has a resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels outputting 1080p full HD and is powered by 1.5 GHz OMAP4470 Dual-Core Processor, according to the official website.

Both the Nooks have no camera. William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble, explains that they did not see a use for cameras and invested on the screen instead.

The company will offer 3 million books, 1 million free titles and more than 100 magazines. It has more than 10,000 apps.

Both models will be available Nov. 1
