‘Bad Piggies’ to Propel Rovio to the Finish Line?

Finnish Game developer Rovio released its much-awaited game Bad Piggies, Thursday, which is quite unlike its other popular game, Angry Birds.

Reports have said that the game hit the No. 1 spot within three hours of its release.

Bad Piggies does not involve flinging birds in the sky or space, the player has to build vehicles, air-based or land-based, and then load the pigs into it and reach a finish line on the map.

The player must take the piggies to the finish line without the vehicle breaking up and earns two stars on accomplishing the same. In case the vehicle breaks but the piggies still manage to roll over to the finish line, the player gets only one star.

If players want a three stars then they have to build a vehicle that can carry multiple piggies without the vehicle breaking to the finish line. This is slightly complicated in Bad Piggies, as it's designed not to be very easy.

Angry Birds is lenient on letting users move to the next level. This was criticized by gamers, TechCrunch reported.

While, Angry Birds Space had a new feature - anti-gravity - Bad Piggies has engineering.

Rovio is known for making games playable across the demographic divide - moms, kids, gamers, non-gamers. But Bad Piggies will irritate non-gamers, as it's not as easy as Angry Birds.

Rovio has certainly tried to move a notch higher making the new game challenging, but it is not very competitive. Rovio continues bringing newer non-Angry Birds. In July it released Amazing Alex, which went to the top of the download chart but now has dropped out of even the top 50 list.

"Rovio needs a big hit right now. Over the past two months, Rovio's revenue-generation ability has suddenly slipped badly," said analyst Tero Kuittinen from Finnish mobile analytics firm Alekstra to Reuters.

Founded in 2003, the company's sales saw a massive ten-fold jump. According to Reuters, the company is going toward expansion into merchandising products and may even go public next year. But Rovio's revenues have been down of late.

Will Bad Piggies pump it back to its goal? Let's wait and watch.
